Birthday Cake

The birthday cake which is a vital part of birthday celebrations is part of the Western Culture which has become a global one now. Now every country celebrates a person's birthday with a birthday cake. Of course they may have their own cuisine to go with this cake, but the cake is the main item at the celebration of a person's birthday. Along with the rest of the western culture of cutting the cake, there is a lot of singing and dancing at birthday celebrations and the birthday person is made to feel very special. Gifts are given to the person by all those who attend the birthday celebrations.

Birthday cakes are made in a variety of flavors and designs today. Even the shapes are elaborate and are made according to the likes of the person whose birthday is being celebrated. For kids it is often made in the shape of their favorite comic character, like Donald Duck, Felix the cat, Bugs Bunny or the many other comic characters which kids enjoy reading about. For teenage girls it is usually a more romantic cake which is molded like a flower or something just as girly. Boys usually like things like aero planes, cars and bikes. The icing on the cake is made to match the design and the flavor goes by it too. While for kids it is usually a chocolate flavor, for young girls it is a vanilla and strawberry cream and for young men it could be chocolate and mixed icing according to the design of their birthday cake.

For older people the cake is usually more sophisticated and elegant in design and color. Often it has a white vanilla icing with a single rose on it. The cutting of the cake is also done with less of noise than at the parties of the younger generation and the pieces of birthday cake are distributed around on small paper plates with a cake fork to eat it with. The birthday cake for the young is often passed around on the main plate and the first piece is offered to the birthday person. Sometimes the friends smear the first piece of cake on the face of the birthday baby.

There are candles to mark each year of the person's age on the cake and before cutting the cake these have to be blown out preferably in one big "blow". Here again for the older generation there is a discreet large single candle to mark the person's age.
